Ratings

Rating a work for appropriate content is an inexact science, especially across mediums. For those of you unfamiliar with these various rating systems, I have provided a list below of the ones you may encounter here on Second Unit Reviews. Remember that these ratings are “more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules.” Use your own best judgement when deciding what is comfortable and appropriate for you and any younglings under your care.

MOVIES:
Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)

  • G — General Audiences (Suitable for all ages)
  • PG — Parental Guidance Suggested (Some material may not be suitable for children)
  • PG-13 — Parents Strongly Cautioned (Some material may be inappropriate for children under age 13)
  • R — Restricted (Viewers under age 17 must be accompanied by an adult)
  • NC-17 — Adults Only (No one age 17 and under admitted)

TV SHOWS:
TV Parental Guidelines (US)

  • TV-Y — Designed to be appropriate for all children, including ages 2-6
  • TV-Y7 — Designed for children age 7+
  • TV-G — Generally suitable for all ages, but may not have content of interest to children
  • TV-PG — Contains material that may be unsuitable for younger children
  • TV-14 — Contains material that may be unsuitable for children under age 14
  • TV-MA — Designed specifically for adults and therefore unsuitable for viewers under age 17

COMIC BOOKS:

Marvel Rating System 
  • All Ages — Appropriate for all ages
  • Teen — Appropriate for most readers, but some content may not be suitable for young children
  • Teen+ — For teens ages 13+
  • Parental Advisory — For ages 15+
  • MAX: Explicit Content — For ages 18+
DC Rating System
  • E – Everyone — Appropriate for all ages
  • T – Teen — For ages 12+
  • T+ – Teen Plus — For ages 15+
  • M – Mature — For ages 17+

ANIME:

  • Kodomomuke — Directed at children under age 12
  • Shonen — Directed at boys ages 12-18
  • Shojo — Directed at girls ages 12-18
  • Seinen — Directed at men over age 18
  • Josei — Directed at women over age 18

VIDEO GAMES:
Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB)

  • EC — Early Childhood
  • E — Everyone
  • E10+ — Everyone 10+
  • T — Teen
  • M — Mature
  • AO — Adults Only
